It happens many times. Often new Linux system administrators and user(s) get confused. They are not able to determine if Linux system can run a 64 bit kernel version (and application) or not. There is simple way to find out:

HP-UX: getconf KERNEL_BITS

IBM-AIX: bootinfo –K

Redhat: Linux getconf LONG_BIT

Using of a NETWORK MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

For decades, companies need to have network administrators work 24 x 7 x 365 to manage a corporate network, and it consumes lot of time and money to manage a CRITICAL corporate network. These restrictions can be overcome by the use of a NETWORK MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE. Let see what is a Network Management Software.

Network management means different things to different people. In some cases, it involves a solitary network consultant monitoring network activity with an outdated protocol analyzer. In other cases, network management involves a distributed database, autopolling of network devices, and high-end workstations generating real-time graphical views of network topology changes and traffic. In general, network management is a service that employs a variety of tools, applications, and devices to assist human network managers in monitoring and maintaining networks.

Most network management architectures use the same basic structure and set of relationships. End stations (managed devices), such as computer systems and other network devices, run software that enables them to send alerts when they recognize problems (for example, when one or more user-determined thresholds are exceeded). Upon receiving these alerts, management entities are programmed to react by executing one, several, or a group of actions, including operator notification, event logging, system shutdown, and automatic attempts at system repair.

Management entities also can poll end stations to check the values of certain variables. Polling can be automatic or user-initiated, but agents in the managed devices respond to all polls. Agents are software modules that first compile information about the managed devices in which they reside, then store this information in a management database, and finally provide it (proactively or reactively) to management entities within network management systems (NMSs) via a network management protocol. Well-known network management protocols include the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP). Management proxies are entities that provide management information on behalf of other entities. Figure 6-1 depicts a typical network management architecture.

This is in brief about a Network Management Software.

How to Identify Current Shell

This is how we can find out what the CURRENT shell we are working on a *NIX machine.

ps | grep "$$"

echo "$" will give PID for current shell.

Commands to find DEFAULT shell (for different platforms): echo $SHELL or print $SHELL or set | grep SHELL

Some other useful environement variables:

current shell - what is the current shell - echo $SHELL
terminal - what is the name of the terminal - echo $TERM
search path for executable files - the path used to find an executable file - echo $PATH
home - home directory - echo $HOME
logname - name logged in withecho $LOGNAME

Removing ^M character in UNIX

UNIX treats the end of line differently than other operating systems. Sometimes when editing files in both Windows and UNIX environments, a CTRL-M character is visibly displayed at the end of each line as ^M in vi.

To remove the ^M characters at the end of all lines in vi, use:

:%s/^V^M//g

The ^v is a CONTROL-V character and ^m is a CONTROL-M. When you type this, it will look like this:

:%s/^M//g

In UNIX, you can escape a control character by preceeding it with a CONTROL-V. The :%s is a basic search and replace command in vi. It tells vi to replace the regular expression between the first and second slashes (^M) with the text between the second and third slashes (nothing in this case). The g at the end directs vi to search and replace globally (all occurrences).

Recently I needed to access another windows XP box and I don't have terminal services client installed on the machine i was working on. So I searched on the NET and found out that we can use a binary mstsc.exe directly without needing to install Terminal service client.

Use your gears wisely.
Driving in the highest gear possible without labouring the engine is a fuel-efficient way of driving. A vehicle travelling at 37mph in third gear uses 25 percent more fuel than at the same speed in fifth gear

Drive smoothly
Think ahead! By applying light throttle and avoiding heavy braking, you can reduce both fuel consumption and wear and tear. Research suggests driving techniques can influence fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent.

Switch off your engine
Whenever it is safe to do so, switch off your engine, especially when stuck in traffic for a few minutes. If you have air conditioning think before you use it - it increases fuel consumption.

Drive off promptly
Don't leave your engine running when you first start up. Drive off straight away if you can, but drive gently until the engine has reached its normal operating temperature.

Lighten your load
Think carefully about what you need on a journey. if you do not need something, do not pack it. Remove roof racks if not needed. The lighter the load, the lower the fuel consumption and emissions.

Check your tyres
It is estimated that about 50% of tyres on the road are under inflated. Aside from increasing the rate of wear, this wastes fuel. Check your tyre pressures every fortnight.
